Was reading this book by Martin Edge at Kino yesterday. It's in the 3rd edition already, and I spent 1+ hours reading it. It's really an amazing and useful book, covering from all the basics of photography, to the techniques employed by good underwater photographers.
One of the techniques suggested, and I was beginning to employ but didn't quite realise, was that we should always take pictures with the subject above the camera. Too often, we are just taking pictures downwards, as we might on land, since it's like a lot more natural. But this means that we will be taking the subject in question against the reef/rock/sand, which doesn't really show off the beauty of the underwater environment. Capturing the pictures from down upwards will capture the essence of the water and the subject.
Now i'm totally psyched about underwater photography. Planning to get the new Canon Powershot G11 and Underwater Housing DC-34 sometime this year, and then i'll be taking picture galore! Too bad Dive Photography is SUCH an expensive hobby, DIVING and UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY (with underwater housing, macro lens, fish-eye lens and the various strobe lights, etc) combined.
